Sea Kayaking

Dunk Island

Coral Sea Kayaking is owned and operated by David Tofler and Atalanta Willy.  Since the very early 90’s Coral Sea Kayaking had been our dream.  We honed our wilderness and adventure guiding skills in various destinations around the world, including cultural and adventure tours in northern Thailand, white-water rafting and hiking in the wild regions of north eastern Turkey, sea kayaking expeditions and white-water rafting on the Zambesi, Omo and White Nile rivers in Africa.

In early 1998 we returned to Tropical North Queensland to establish this dream in Mission Beach. Over time we have chosen a small team of dedicated guides, all of whom have many years experience wilderness guiding worldwide and they all consider Hinchinbrook and our neighbouring islands as uniquely special

Come and enjoy Dunk Island as nature intended. An adventurous and active way to explore Dunk Island, away from the noise and bustle of motors, simply glide along the surface of the water and enjoy the views of the fringing coral reef and watch for sea turtles and rays to swim past. The beaches we visit are within the island’s National Park, unspoilt natural sandy and coral beaches backed by lush tropical rainforest.

We leave South Mission Beach and paddle across to Dunk Island, this is an easy paddle and we will teach you all the paddling skills you might need. Whilst crossing we may be able to see dolphins and turtles. Stopping at a nearby island for a homemade midmorning snack we then paddling on to explore the shallow inshore waters of Dunk Island’s beautiful coastline.

On Dunk Island we have time to relax on the beach or try snorkelling to get a closer look at the coral and tropical fish in the warm clear waters. Lunch will be a selection of delicious salads, cold cuts and tropical fruit. In the afternoon we can enjoy a walk through the rainforest and learn about the island ecology and history.

Our friendly guides have a heaps of interesting facts about these islands and their wild inhabitants.  Then we can return to our kayaks for the afternoon paddle to further explore the nearby islands before our return to the mainland.

The spectacular island also offers a large variety of marine life in the reefs, including crabs, shellfish, sea turtles, fish, dugongs and colourful corals.

As well as magical walking tracks and secluded beaches, Dunk Island also offers toilet and shower amenities on the spit and fantastic campgrounds with BBQ facilities, so upon finishing your walks, you can unpack the picnic in the Day Use Area and spend the rest of the day relaxing under the shade of the palm trees.  Stop in at the Sunsent Bar for lunch and a couple of cold drinks after a wander up Mt Kootaloo!

Fishing

Chopper Flight

“I’m hooked up!”  The words every angler wants to hear!  From reef fish to gamefish and all species in between, our 40 years of experience will “hook you up” with the Mission Beach fishing experience of a lifetime.

Our roomy 26ft custom Sportfisher, the Spirit of Dunk, is decked out with the latest electronics – you will catch fish!  We also have the latest dynamic positioning system which will put you precisely over that school of fish or that reef outcrop and, instead of waiting to deploy 40m of anchor chain, you will be throwing a line in straight away.  You’ll have more time actual fishing instead of waiting for anchoring!

“Spirit of Dunk” is a custom built Geoff Glanville 7.6 metre Offshore Sportfisher, designed, engineered and built in Cairns for far northern conditions, safely handling all sea states and perfect for Mission Beach Fishing! There is plenty of room onboard, we are licensed to carry a maximum of 12 passengers around our islands, and up to 9 to the Outer Great Barrier Reef, making her great for larger groups, fantastic for private charters.

She is fast and comfortable with a 2016 model 225 Yamaha pushing her at up to 25 knots cruise (dependant on sea and wind conditions).

Be it popper , jigging  trolling or bottom fishing, her open centre console design and great stability makes her the logical choice for your offshore trip. Great visibility and her ability to manoeuvre in tight spots allows you to get up close and personal with both the fish and the reef.

“Spirit of Dunk” has new age high accuracy dynamic position technology on board, allowing us to fish, swim or snorkel without an anchor, great for your fishing/snorkelling trip, great for the reef!

She has an easy access duckboard at the stern allowing access for snorkellers/spearfishers, or just have a swim at lunch!
